Costa Rica is a major leader in ecological conservation. Around 1/20th of the world's biodiversity comes from Costa Rica, making it the crown jewel of Central America. Costa Rica’s political stability and strong sense of environmental values are the key holding the best-known protected areas systems in the world. Yet, Costa Rica has been faced with many of the challenges such as a relatively small economy and deforestation.
During my time with the NGO Reserva Playa Tortuga I photographed the biggest pillars of their contribution to conservation in Costa Rica. The organisation is a place for biological research and education. Collecting data on their behavior, diet and local movements offers information that can be used for reforestation plans and establisch biological corridors.
An important project is the sea turtle program. Besides the protection over the turtle nests and succesfully hatchlings it offers an opportunity for volunteers. Through the organisation volunteers can contribute in conservation and learn about the environment.
